{in the picture} facedown!

Happy June everyone--and welcome back to my returning {In the Picture} participants! It's the first Friday of the month, and that means it's time for our new self-portrait theme. Now, I want you to keep an open mind about this one and not immediately think that I am crazy. This month I want you to consider trying a facedown selfie. Don't know what facedown is? Maybe you've heard of planking? Still confused? Here, let me show you...

That's me up there, lying facedown on the cliffs of the Palisades in New Jersey, with the George Washington Bridge in the background. A little selfie taken with my iPhone and my husband acting as a human tripod because this shot just had to be done! As you can see, planking is when you lie down--face down--with your hands at your sides (preferably in a public place, even more preferably in an unusual place) and take a picture. Technically, planking photos do not have to be self-portraits, but since this is a self-portrait project ours will indeed be composed, set up and taken by us!

Not convinced? C'mon, let's have some fun this month. Even if you think it's silly or strange, I guarantee it will make you smile if you try this. And if you do it in public you are sure to get a bit of a rush, and you'll probably giggle a little too! Check out these photos below from our fellow {In The Picture} participant Deb--she's really been having some fun with this the past couple of months--you can check out some of her other planking photos here.

OK, so hopefully you are still here and I haven't scared you off. Let's review our planking steps again:
  1. Lie facedown--on the ground (or propped up on an object--feel free to get creative)
  2. Hands down along your sides (check out Deb's technique in the photo just above, I'd give her a "10" for pointed fingers and toes!)
  3. Preferably in public, but in your backyard or in your house is OK if that's what it takes to get you to do this (a hardcore planker might say that facedown inside your own home doesn't count, but I say it does for us :)
  4. Remember, this is still a self-portrait, so set your timer, use your remote, do whatever you do to capture the shot
If you need a bit more inspiration you should check out these groups on flickr--Facedown Tuesday, Facedown or Go Planking. There are so many amazing and wild shots in these groups--I'm going to take another browse myself to get my creative juices flowing for this theme. I am new to the whole facedown thing--it was on my list of things to try this year--so far I've done two (here's my other one) and I'm looking forward to more this month!

Now remember, our themes here are optional so if this is way too crazy for you, please don't disappear on me. Just take any self-portrait that inspires you this month and we'll be back here on the last Friday in June to share our work at our linky party. See you then!

YAY! Planking can be so liberating...especially after a stressful day! Most of my planks are spontaneous, random and unplanned!! Just drop down and have some fun!!
Thanks Christy for starting off the summer with some playful prompting!

And the really great thing is that 'planking' (like Deb in the last shot) is a fabulous introduction to yoga!!!

My kids already think (know) I'm crazy. If they caught me doing this I'm afraid they'd commit me!
;)

It would be fun to do it in public places and totally discombobulate(sp?) people's humdrum view of how the world should be .... hmmm ....
to plank or not to plank ... that is the ...

Oh... I need some fun and joy for sure because this is almost the hardest time for me at work, and, moreover, I´ve challenged myself to be more spontaneous and playfull... I have to try it, hope I will be brave enough to do it in a public place...
