{in the picture} let's get started!

I am so happy with the overwhelming response I've gotten to our 2012 self-portrait journey {In The Picture}! We are going to build a great community here, learn a lot from each other, and most importantly, learn about ourselves.  I've worked out the general schedule of posts and linky parties that I'll put up here on the blog each month, so check here for those details if you haven't seen them already. Posts here on the blog will always be on a Friday so you know when to stop by if you are not a regular reader.

{self-portrait, taken with iPhone, processed with iris, snapseed and retro camera}

OK, so let's get started! I hope you have all had a chance to think about "your number"--that is, the number of self-portraits you want to challenge yourself to take this year. This decision is entirely up to you. I feel like it helps with the motivation to have a goal in mind...whether it is 2, 52 or 365.

I have heard from many of you that you are just starting out with self-portraiture and you are intimidated by the thought of it...you're no good at it...you're afraid to look at yourself through the lens...you don't know if you have the time to keep up...the list goes on. Well, by being here you have conquered the first step!

I was in your shoes this time last year...I never thought I could do a whole year of selfies, but check out this video of my 52 shots from last year (password: 52self2011 and turn up the volume). I can really see a progression in my photos as the weeks go by (and a little section in the middle where my dog shows up with me an awful lot because she was sick and I was afraid we were going to lose her, but that's another story.)

For this month's theme I thought I'd start us out gently. How about "a piece of me"? When you think of a self-portrait, it doesn't always mean you have to show your whole face. Some of the most interesting portraits can be of an eye, lips, a hand, or shot from an angle that doesn't show your face or your whole body. Remember, themes are optional (and only monthly) so if you have another idea or you are shooting weekly or daily selfies, feel free to think outside the box and go your own way. This project is all about your self-expression so don't let the themes box you in if they don't speak to you.

I'll host our first linky party back here on Friday, January 27 and I hope you will all stop by to link up to your blog posts and flickr pages to show off your work! In the meantime, don't forget to join our flickr group where you can add your self-portraits to the pool at anytime.

As the sign in my photo above says--BELIEVE in yourself (that's my word for 2012). I know you can do this! Keep me posted on how things are going, and let me know if you have any questions.

Grab a button, there's still time to spread the word...

Thank you, Christy! I can't wait to play. (And you want to talk about a person who feared the selfie? That was me just a few months ago.) I don't think I committed to a number earlier--and I agree with you about how it's helpful in setting goals. I'm already involved in two 52 projects this year. I've never done one, but I just completed my first 365 and, as much as I loved it and it taught me a lot, don't want to do that again. (Though I * do * love your selfie 365...I'm saving that idea!) Just to make it easy to remember, I'll commit to a photo a week. I'll want to post one in the next two days so I don't "miss" the first week, lol. Of course, there are no 52 police out there...

Again, thank you for bringing us together. Can't wait to see everyone's photos and I think the theme is great.

xoxo

Hey there, I'm here to tell you I loved your video. The pics are smashing and I got up out of my chair to gyrate to Katy! thanks for hosting {in the picture}. I resist selecting a number for some reason - I've resisted many things initially but end up signing on! I'm excited about where the winding road of this will take me. Any you. And us. take care now Christy.

I did a self portrait journey a few years ago...changed my life. It's so powerful. And Believe was my word last year...and what an amazing year it was.

It's great! I'm gonna make my first photo tomorrow, because it will be the right time and place where I can take the first shot of myself :)

Beautiful selfie of yours. Last year I started taking self-portraits but they were an ocassional shots. Nothing special, nothing with a big plan. I think they prepare me more to be a part of this project, though.
I'm 6 months pregnant with my second child so my word this year is new life, new baby, new me. This year we're expecting to be moving to a new place and a new city... So I can't decide if the word is "new" or "changes".

I swear you must read my mind sometimes or vice versa....before I even came to look at your post I had my first portrait for this project all ready to go, Seems as if we were thinking the same thing about easing into this project....

So Excited! Can wait to see the progression!

It isn't something I really think of ever doing but you know me, I like a challenge and also like to step out of my comfort zone...see you at the end of the month ;)

Love this idea! Thanks to Ashley Sisk I realized I have a huge lack of pictures of myself. I must work on that this year. I challenge myself to twelve atleast. One a month. That is doable for me.

Oh Wow. Your 52 selfies are so inspiring! Wow doesn't even begin.

I'm ready to begin. Nervous, but ready.

Thank you.

Love this shot- I've decided my number is 48. I'll take 4 each month & link up at the end of each month- so good to have a project! Thanks :)

Gorgeous collection from last year. I hope to grow more this year. Last year I was more literal (as I always am) with my selfies but his year I might like to try to be more artistic. Let's see if I have it in me :) Happy New Year!

All those shots of you are fantastic. Very creative! I am sure you remember every week of that year! I think I will stick to one portrait a month. Thank you for the gentle first topic, that's a comfortable start! I am looking forward to this!

Truly inspiring video!! Thanks for sharing. I am going to make an effort to join in so my girls don't wonder where all the photos of their Mum were !! I much rather take them than being in them.

I took a selfportrait class last year and it changed my relationship with myself and with photography, it was an amazing experience which made me discover a wonderful tool to do my inner work and makes me feel encouraged to share it, so now I´m not only taking photos, I´m writing a blog too.

I love this idea and I would like to participate in this project.

Your selfie are wonderful, truly inspiring video, thanks!

My word for this year is "emerge". I think this might be an excellent way to encourage its fulfillment. I need to ponder a bit ... Susan

As someone who is way more comfortable on the 'other side' of the camera, I have avoided the self-portrait out of fear, insecurity...you name it. But...the way you have presented this challenge is so safe & accessible! Plus, this project will definitely support my 'word' for the year...EMBRACE! So here I go...I am going to EMBRACE the selfie, and my number is 12 (one for each month). Thanks!
