pigeon ladies

I recently saw these two women in a small park on 6th Avenue in Greenwich Village. After watching them for a less than a minute it was obvious to me that feeding these pigeons is a daily ritual for them.

The pigeons were quite happy--and the women seemed very comfortable with hundreds of birds swarming around them.

If you look closely you can see a couple of the birds perched on her toes and sitting in her lap!

Although I was a little creeped out by how close they got to the pigeons, I couldn't help but stop and capture their happy moment.

I agree, there is something so sweet and something so wrong about it all in the same thought. I love this though.

I would be a little freaked out too. The Hitchcock movie "The Birds" springs to mind. The two woman do seem to be enjoying their moment with the pigeons though. A wonderful set.

We have 2 old ladies in our village too who come to feed bread crumbs daily to the pigeons. Though the pigeons are very few in number, not so many as above..:)

If you live in a city this is one of the few ways to get close to the birds and animals. Nice pictures.

I like the vintage dress on the younger lady. Actually I like everything about your set of photographs. But my favorite is the thin man walking past in the first one.

I love the way you captured this! Yes a bit creepy, but they obviously loved it!

Pigeons drive me nuts...but you've got some fabulous shots. I loved the color especially. I devote at least an hour every Sunday to scrape off my verandah floor - coz the pigeons mess it up real bad. :-) If they went away, I'd miss them though, I am sure.

You have a beautiful blog.

I too hold pigeons in low regard, yet your photos change my view a bit - these women are getting something lovely from their visit to the pigeons, I think. There's a connection there that feel very close and happy.

Wow, I don't know if I'd be comfortable that close to all those birds. But those are some pretty great photos.

What a delightful post. I was once enjoying a sidewalk breakfast with a friend when a pigeon jumped on the table to peck at my food. It then flew up to my shoulder, walked down my arm and started eating my breakfast sandwich out of my hand. My companion said there was no way this was a wild bird. It had to have been domesticated and lost its owner. He went to the Feed & Grain Store (1 block away) to get help. Someone came and took the bird away for its own safety. I'm sure they found it a good home. I got pictures of it. Do you want to see?

Oh how cute. I wonder who get the most enjoyment from this daily ritual..the birds or the ladies! You got some great shots, too!

A very different kind of "pet" and a slice of city life. Love the way you are documenting NY and contemporary living!

That's pretty awesome. No, I wouldn't want to get that close to pigeons, but I can appreciate what they're doing.

And that second photo, with all the movement is amazing.

Your pictures are great!
But...I don't like pigeons. In Casa they mess around, balconies were like dirty toilets.
Here in Helsinki you can see lots of 'pigeon thorns' so that pigeons can't sit on windowsills.
But as I said, your photographs are great! :)
