In a nutshell, I've been leaving notes that say "Smile At A Stranger Today" on the NYC subway. I leave them on the seats, taped to the walls, anywhere I can. Everyone is so serious these days, I'm just trying to lighten things up and bring some smiles back into it!
Maybe you'd like to make a note and hang it in a public place? It doesn't have to be on the subway--it could be on a lamppost, at the mall, in a restroom. Or maybe you want to hang one on your mirror, you know, just as a reminder to yourself!

For more details and photos check out my mini blog Smile At A Stranger and my flickr group. I'll be doing this all summer and I'd love to spread the smiles around!

Very cool project - do I get bonus points if I give them high 5? :)
I love this!!! I'm totally in! I don't "flickr" much but I'll post it on my blog and show you some Link Love ( I already do, you're on my main page) :) This really is an awesome idea and something I try to do daily, but to remind other people is such a wonderful way to spread the love.
Awesome idea! Smiling away over here!
Awww, what a sweet idea. I'll have to chew on this. I don't go anywhere -- and I don't think my chickens can log on to your blog without help. Or smile, for that matter. ;)
Great project! What happens when you smile at strangers. Do they smile back?
What a sweet and wonderful idea. The cool thing is you have the potential to make someone's day....and perhaps get some smiles back in return. Love it.
I'm kinda hoping I find one of these :)
Love, love, love this idea!!!! Count me in!
Huh, and here I was back in the US thinking that people smile and say hi so much more here than in Italy! But maybe it's also the big city anonymity rather than the small town friendliness. Or maybe it's me speaking the language (both verbal and body) so much better here...
Speaking of smiles...
that shot of the orange seats is spectacular...
amazing vibrance/contrast...
A great idea!
what a cool idea, I will join!!!
Very fun and uplifting project! I know that a smile from someone I don't know makes me thing - Wow, the world is filled with kind and friendly people. It's a good feeling!

i will do it on the train!
Wonderful! I did something similiar a couple of years ago with a "happiness guerrilla" group -- it was so much fun!
this is too cool for school! i love this.
love it! i just may have to join you! you brought a smile to me already. Kim
Love this idea!
I have no time now, but I'm gonna keep in mind to copy it here in Barcelona!
cool beans. totally in. will be participating in encouraging smiles in Delhi, India! (will blog it in August --- you going to be doing this for awhile?)
so happy this will continue all summer - will definitely jump in for August ... and because I'm too lazy to jump back up, your series of windows on the train is wicked! Keep it up!
I love this! I think that the handwritten "smile" notes would get my attention far more than the preprinted cards would. It would make me think that someone actually took the time to care enough to make a sign, and I'd be impressed. We don't have anything like public transportation where I live, so I'll just be a cheerleader! :)
I kind of got lost in your blog - thank you, it's been enjoyable!! I smile at people all the time. I never thought about it much, not enough to think to remind folks to do it, but what a great idea!
I'm loving your photos and musings. Enjoy your August break. I'll be back again :0)
