As I walked down Canal Street it was clear that the heat was certainly not keeping the hundreds of vendors away from their trade. If you've never been, Canal Street is a crowded commercial area of lower Manhattan known for its shops and open air stalls selling everything from counterfeit designer bags, to hats and cheap jewelry, from clothing to DVDs to kitschy souvenirs.
I got several shots off of this man, although I don't think he was too happy about it. But how could I resist all that fabulous color!
The man at the shop at the photos I took below actually yelled and told me I had to give him a dollar for taking pictures of his NYC souvenirs. Uh, mister, I don't think so....

I think the heat was getting to this man...he wasn't trying too hard to sell these suitcases.

Now, the reason I was walking around in this area in the extreme heat is that the Impossible Project store is on Broadway just off Canal Street. For those wondering what the verdict is on my beautiful Polaroid SX-70 land camera...it needs a little repair. While I was disappointed to hear this, the guy in the IP store said it's in great condition and should be easy to fix. But since I needed instant gratification (pun intended) in shooting with a Polaroid camera, I bought a second (much cheaper) camera so I could start experimenting right away.

Love the juxtapostion of the ornate architechture in the background of the first photo with the less than classic souvenirs!
I'm loving the first photo - that color pop makes me wonderfully happy. And I can't tell if he didn't want his picture taken or if it's just by nature that he is stoic.
Stay cool - it's already 98 here and it's only 9:30 - yep I'm going to the beach!!
I need to dig out my Polaroid camera too. Canal Street is a wonderful place for street photos.
Great color and composition.
It's funny. I just recently got a new camera, but does it stop me from wanting another? Nope!
I really, really want just a plain old DSLR camera. Even a used DSLR would work for me, as long as it's still working. Aaaahhh, but yeah, a new camera would be nice.
I tried frying an egg on our 104F days, but it didn't fry or even change properties.
indeed how to resist all that color.. great shots
I love these street photos!
I love the polaroids! And I've never heard of the impossible project store. I'll have to look them up.
I love the colour in the first shot, it makes it a happy photo even if the vendor isn't!
Love Canal St., and congratulations on the SX-70. You're going to love it!
Wonderful photographs!
Great photos. I'm laughing that the one vendor tried to charge you a buck to snapping that photo. Sounds like a NY vendor.
Stopping by from SIMC.
Have a great week and I hope it cools down a bit over there.
great place to get colorful shot ... temps were down a bit today ... woot woot
Somehow with all the color in that firs shot it doesn't feel quite so hot. (it's been miserably hot here too)
Congrats on the new camera! Can't wait to see some of your cool pics.
christy, that first photo reminds me of hong kong. the markets are filled with vendors like that. i love your new polaroid! i don't have one like that!
It is so weird seeing your hot hot heat photos, it is freezing here! The heater is blaring. You have inspired me to take a second go with my Polaroid!
Wow that's hot! Guess I shouldn't complain when we hit 90 degrees. NY is certainly a colorful city. Love the shot with the guy selling the suitcases! Can't wait to see your Polaroid shots.
My fuji instax should be arriving today...I am VERY excited! I look forward to visiting the IP Store...didn't know they had an actual storefront!
I always get irritated with shops that say you can't take pictures of souvenirs. I promise, I am not going to try to replicate your offerings! Lovely photos. I'm curious to see more of your instant photography!
You are a brave one. I'd be afraid Mr. Vendor would throw something at me. :)
Love all the photos though. Glad you braved the heat to take them.
absolutely love your street shots. How is your poor dog coping in the heat??
So much to see in the city - I live in the suburbs of So Cal....pretty boring around here =)
Gorgeous colors! and I have Pola envy for sure!
Love your patterns - they are everywhere in these shots! I love all of the color you found. Sorry your first camera didn't work, how's the "backup" camera working out? :) Thanks for linking in!
Great shots for exploring with a camera :)
