When I initially read the prompt for this week's Sunday Creative I thought, oh boy, denim, what am I going to do with that one? A pair of my jeans? (too obvious??). Something beautiful that is a deep indigo color? (maybe). Or some random inspiration that would hopefully come to me over the course of the week? (hopefully).
Later that day on the subway on our way to a 4th of July party I noticed someone wearing jeans and thought to myself, "It's so hot, why is that guy wearing jeans? Ugh." Then it hit me...denim...duh?! I decided right then and there that over the coming week, I would use my trusty iPhone to surreptitiously take photos of subway riders wearing denim--not their faces, just their denim--be it jeans, skirts, shorts or jackets.
Now, we had a verifiable heat wave this week, and I cannot believe how many people I saw wearing jeans! It's interesting to me because I never would have noticed all the denim but for "The Sunday Creative". I appreciate how the weekly prompts make me more observant, my senses keener. Now I know, it's not like noticing whether people were wearing denim changed my life or enriched me in some deep and meaningful way. However, the prompts and challenges make me take notice of things I would have been oblivious to otherwise. I like that.
So here are some of my favorites. It's not easy taking photos on a moving train while trying to make sure neither your subject, nor the nosy New Yorker on your right and left, can tell what you are up to. Enjoy my little project I like to call Denim Train!
During one of my undercover photo shoots I was deep in denim myself...wearing a denim skirt, and reading the book Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. So this last shot is of me!
